I WAS CHIEFLY interested in finding out what I could do with the figure and with color. I did not have any plans or schemes or ideas.
Color was usually the primary motive to start with because I would have the impulse to work with a certain color and, once I chose that, other color choices would follow.
You might say that, in a sense, I was led along by color. I was then, and continue to be, aware that my feelings were being engaged by color.
As I applied color to the canvas, an inner story would also evolve, which was sometimes even separate from the actual image on the canvas.
